BANDHANI SAREE – PRIDE OF GUJARAT AND RAJASTHAN

India is land of art and craft. Indian people don’t need any canvas or paper to showcase its beauty.  They used to craft and art on leaf, wall, cloths etc.. In fashion world India is very famous for it’s varieties of sarees. One unique saree of Gujarat and Rajasthan is “bandhani”, which is made by tie and dye process. Bandhani sarees are believed to be one of the richest and most beautiful traditional sarees that can find its reference during the great Alexander times. The term bandhani derived from Sanskrit word “BANDA”, which means tie. Since 5000 year ago this tie and dye process was started. It is an ancient art, mainly practiced in Rajasthan and Gujarat state. In Rajasthan mainly Ajmer, Jaipur, Sikar, Bhilwas, Udaipur, Bikaner and in Gujarat mainly Jamnagar, Kutch are well known centers producing odhnis, sarees and turbans in Bandhani.




The art of bandhani originated from the Muslim Khatri community of Kutch. The various types of motifs produced are flowers, creepers, bells or jalas. The types of available patterns are mountain type, web type, and vine type. The Bandhani sarees are created in many designs like Dungar shahi, Chaubasi, Satbandi, Boond, Kodi, Ekdali, Laddu Jalebi, Tikunthi  etc. In Rajasthan, the lehriya or wave type pattern is most famous and is worn by ladies during Teej and Rakshabandhan festival.



The range of colour in Bandhani sarees varies from red and yellow to other bright and appealing shades like orange, pink, maroon, blue and green. Traditionally, the red colour represents a girl who is recently married and yellow colour represents a new mother. The colour maroon is an all-time favourite and much in demand these days. The material used to make include cotton, Gajji silk, muslin, fur etc. Such sarees in Gujarat are known as Gharchola.
