Kutch is famous for it’s kutch embroidery which is also
known as kachhi work. Since 16th and 17th centuries
kachhi work has been done. It is also said that cobbler known as mochis are
trained in this art form by muslim sufi saint. The art form became a vocation
for women of kutch. This became generational art with the skill taught from
mother to daughter. Women of kutch embroider everything from garment to
wall hangings, toran, bed covers, bags,
decor of camel and horse. In starting women work only for their own and slowly
she work for other and create source income.
Usually kachhi work is done on cotton and silk fabric
involves use of woollen and silk thread in fine stitch like square chain,
double buttonhole, pattern darning, running stitch, satin and straight stitches.
Colourful kachhi work sparkle when small beads and mirrors known “ABHLA” are sewn
over geometrical shaped design. Things seen in daily lives; flowers and
bushes, peacocks and camels, women doing household chores and men tending to
cattle, all these are inspirations for these beautiful designs. Mainly off-white,
yellow, madder red, black, indigo, ivory, and green.
